How to Make a Rainbow Rose

Rainbow roses are a beautiful gift or an addition to any home decor. Best of all, rainbow roses can be made at home. You can make rainbow roses with real roses, but if you feel a little less daring, you can also make a paper version.

Using Royal Roses: Preparing the rose

Selecting the rose

Make a Rainbow Rose Step 1

Choose a white rose. Start with a white rose or very light colors to make a real rose of the rainbow. For the purest color, a white rose is the best.

If you can not find a white rose to use, try a peach rose, pale yellow or light pink. Avoid the use of red roses or dark pink roses; Dark colors will not work because the deep shadow prevents the color from being seen.

Keep in mind that the stage where the rose it will affect the speed or slowness with which the dye takes hold. A rose that is near its flowering stage, or that is already in its flowering stage, will accept the color more easily. On the other hand, arose in its cocoon stage will take much longer.

Preparing the rose

Cut the stem. Cut the stem of the rose so that it has approximately the length you want it to have.

Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to cut the bottom of the shank at an angle.

To determine the appropriate length, base the height of the stem on the height of the containers in which you will dye the rose or the height of the vase in which you plan to keep the rose afterward. The stem of the rose should be only a little higher than the length of the final vase. However, it should not be much higher than the height of the dyeing containers, otherwise, the rose will become very heavy and will not sit well inside the containers.

Divide the stem into sections. Use a sharp blade to divide the end of the stem into several sections. You can use scissors or a knife, but in any case, the tool you choose must be sharp. The stem of a rose is quite woody, and if you use a dull blade, you could end up causing the stem to break or tear the rose.

The cut should extend from the bottom of the rose to about 1 inch (2.5 cm) away from the base of the petals.

Divide the stem into two or four sections. If you cut too many sections in the stem, you run the risk of weakening it.

Keep in mind that the number of sections in which you cut the stem will determine the number of colors in the rose of your rainbow.

Adding colors

Mix several colors of food coloring in cups of water. Fill tall, narrow containers with water and mix a few drops of food coloring in each container. Choose a different color for each container.

  • As already mentioned, the number of colors must match the number of sections in which the stem is divided.
  • The more food coloring you use, the brighter the colors will be in the resulting rainbow rose.
  • The best containers will be narrow and resistant. Avoid using wide-lipped containers, since split sections of the stem should stretch into each container, and wider lips may be more difficult to stretch the sections of the stem. A palette mold works well, as do the small votive vessels.

Place each section of the stem in a different container. Carefully place each section of the split stem into a different colored water container, making sure that the cut ends are completely submerged.

Be very careful when folding and placing the sections of the stem. The split stem is especially weak, and if you move the sections too hard, you could end up breaking them by accident.

Place colored water containers directly next to each other. This will keep the entire structure more secure and limit the amount of space you need to stretch the stems.

Make a Rainbow Rose Step 8

Let the roses rest for a few days. You should notice some color change within the first 30 minutes, but for a vibrant rainbow rose, you will have to let the rose settle in your dye bath for a few days.

It can take a full week before the colors become noticeably vibrant, but after a single day, each of the petals should be colored.

The stained water will be absorbed through the stem of the rose just as the standard water would be taken. As the stained water moves through the parts of the rose and hydrates the petals, the dye will be deposited on the petals. As the petals are white, the dye is easily seen.

Using paper
Selecting the paper

Select a square of rainbow paper. To enjoy the most color of your pink paper rainbow, choose a square of paper with a rainbow print on the front and back.
You can also choose a sheet of square paper with a white side, a plain side or a pattern on the opposite side. Play with different types of paper to find the appearance that you like the most.
Origami paper works especially well. The standard size for origami paper is 9 by 9 inches (23 by 23 cm).

If you start with plain white paper, you can use crayons or crayons to color a rainbow pattern on the entire sheet of paper. To get the best results, try placing the colors diagonally across the square from one corner to the opposite corner.

Cut the beginning of a circle shape. Start from the middle of one edge and start cutting a circle on the square paper, getting as close as possible to the other three edges.
Do not cut the edges yet at this point.

Divert the circle in a spiral. Once you approach the starting point of your circle, move the cutting line approximately 1/2 inch (1.25 cm). Continue cutting around the inside perimeter of your spiral until you reach the center.

Make a Rainbow Rose Step 9
The thickness of the spiral should be similar in all directions, which means that the approximate thickness of the spiral should be about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) evenly.

Make a Rainbow Rose Step 14

Cut the spiral by free hand. You do not need to be precise with this technique. In fact, this rose looks best when the principle of "wabi sabi" is maintained, a Japanese aesthetic focused on the beauty of the imperfect.

Make a Rainbow Rose Step 15

Cut a tab shape in the center of the spiral. At the end of the spiral, which must fall in the exact center, it will naturally end up with a small flange that looks a little wider than the thickness of the spiral.
The tab should be quite circular with a slight notch in it.

Make a Step Rainbow Rose 16

Remove the outer square. Cut the outer square shape by simply cutting it off at the point where its circular spiral shape began.

The angles and sharp edges of this section will only stand in the way of the final rose shape.

Wind the spiral from the outside inwards. [3] Wind the entire spiral towards its center, rolling along the top of the paper.
When starting, the roll should be as tight as possible. Use both hands to roll the paper spiral. Hold the developing roll between two fingers of one hand and use the other hand to move the remaining paper around the roll to incorporate it.

Make a Step Rainbow Rose 17

Initially, the final roll will look very tight and not very much like a rose.

Make a Rainbow Rose Step 18

Adjust the tension of the spiral. Slowly release the tension that holds the spiral together, allowing the roll to loosen and unravel slightly while maintaining its basic shape. Let the tension decrease less for a tighter roll and let it lower further to get a looser rose.

Make a Step Rainbow Rose 19

Glue the tab on the bottom of the rose. Add a drop of hot glue to the top of the tab and press firmly against the bottom of the rose. Make sure each spiral is trapped in the glue.
Be sure to use hot glue or glue that dries almost instantly.

Make a Step Rainbow Rose 20

You should also make sure that the edge of each spiral adheres to the glue. Otherwise, the rose can be undone once you release it.

Make a Step Rainbow Rose 21

As soon as the glue dries, place the rose down. Your rainbow paper rose should be complete.

Repeat to do more!
